Nolan Ross - Revenge
(I was going to take a break from Revenge characters, but I need to get Nolan done just in case something… unfortunate happens to him during the season finale.) (This post also contains spoilers for the episode “Grief”.)
This one was a little harder. I don’t think Nolan’s personality is as clearly defined into one of the houses as I felt both Emily/Amanda and Jack were. But here is what I decided:
"It is quite common for [them] to hide their true selves in public. This makes them quite the mystery to the untrained eye, a curious puzzle that some may want to figure out, and with good reason." - I feel like it we never saw Nolan during his interactions with Emily, we probably would think he was a mystery. The only other person we really see him interact with is Jack. Even in the Pilot episode when he is at the Greyson’s party, he is keeping to himself, filming everything.
"Our people are the most individual – some might even call them eccentrics.” - I think Nolan’s pretty eccentric. No one else wanted to invest in his company, besides David Clark, so other people clearly thought he was a little out of whack.
“The most positive trait of [this house] is very often their intellect. As well as general knowledge of most things, they also tend to specialize and focus their interests, and can become like walking encyclopedias of specific areas of study or hobbies.” - Nolan is clearly gifted with computers. That’s why Emily is always going to him when she needs help with the technological side of her plans.
“[They] are observant and curious, often preferring to watch people from a distance, rather than interact” - Again, I point you to his filming everything in the Pilot. Seems very observant and watchful to me.
"They can at times lack common or social sense." - Say what you want, but I think something was clearly lacking in Nolan’s sense during the last episode when he bugged the white-haired man’s house. I’m glad he gave Emily the wrong address and everything, but there wasn’t nearly enough planning behind this. They should have learned more about him before attempting something like that.
"They much prefer to have a few close friends, ones that enhance them mentally and challenge them to be better.” - I would say that his relationship with Emily enhances him mentally and challenges him. She makes him question right and wrong. I would argue that even his relationship with Jack challenges him to be better.
For these reasons, I sort Nolan into:
The reason I was having trouble with this sorting was because Nolan has begun to take a much more active role in Emily’s revenge plan. I was thinking that this might make him slightly more Gryffindor, but Gryffindors are also described as people who would try and hurt others who hurt them. I could never see Nolan betraying Emily’s secret just because she offended him in some way. He’s has plenty of reason to in some of the episodes this season and hasn’t.
